WooWoo Medicine — Why We Need Awe

Why We Need Awe

There are moments in life that leave us speechless.

A sky filled with stars. A breathtaking mountain view. The first time we hold a newborn baby. A rainbow after a storm. Standing at the edge of the ocean as wave after wave crashes onto the shore.

For just a moment, everything else seems to disappear.

Psychologists call this feeling awe, and it turns out it is much more than simply appreciating something beautiful.

Awe is the emotional experience of encountering something so vast, meaningful, or extraordinary that it changes the way we see ourselves and the world around us. It is a feeling that has inspired artists, scientists, explorers, philosophers, and spiritual seekers throughout history.

Modern research suggests that moments of awe can reduce stress, improve mood, encourage generosity, and help us feel more connected to other people. Some researchers believe awe quiets the constant chatter of the mind by reminding us that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves.

Perhaps that is why civilizations throughout history have sought experiences that inspired awe. Ancient people gathered beneath the stars, built temples aligned with the heavens, climbed mountains, honored giant trees, and passed down stories about the mysteries of the universe. Whether viewed through science, spirituality, or simple curiosity, awe has always been part of our experience.

The wonderful thing about awe is that it does not require a passport or an expensive vacation. We might find it while watching a meteor shower, listening to thunder roll across distant hills, seeing thousands of fireflies dancing across a summer field, or watching a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis.

It may appear while we stand beneath a towering waterfall, watch a spectacular sunset, hear music that gives us chills, or witness an act of kindness that restores our faith in people.

Those moments remind us that life is bigger than deadlines, bills, notifications, and endless to-do lists. They help us slow down, become present, and remember that wonder is not reserved for childhood.

We need awe because without it, life can begin to feel flat and colorless. We may move from one responsibility to the next, accomplishing what needs to be done while slowly losing touch with what makes being alive feel extraordinary.

Awe puts the color back.

It reminds us that mystery still exists, beauty still matters, and the world is filled with things we do not completely understand. It gives us permission to stop analyzing everything for a moment and simply be amazed.

So this week, make time for something that takes your breath away. Watch the stars. Visit a place that makes you feel small in the best possible way. Listen to the wind moving through the trees. Stand in the rain. Look for something that reminds you the world is still filled with extraordinary things.

Because sometimes the greatest medicine is not found in a bottle.

Sometimes it is found in a moment that leaves us standing there with nothing to say but...

Wow.
