Who Is the Crow Mother?
The Crow Mother Kachina, known as Angwusnasomtaka in Hopi tradition, is often seen as both a nurturer and disciplinarian. She is the mother of all Kachinas, a matriarchal figure who embodies the Hopi worldview that strength and compassion coexist. Her name translates roughly as “Carrying the Crow,” and she is depicted wearing a distinctive crow feather headdress and black markings upon her face.
Role in Hopi Ritual
The Crow Mother plays a central role in the Powamuya, or Bean Dance Ceremony, held in February to ensure fertility, growth, and renewal. In these rituals, she often carries yucca whips, symbols of discipline and respect. She is said to whip children not in cruelty, but as a sacred act — a way to remind them of their responsibilities, respect for tradition, and connection to the community. This dual aspect — nurturing yet fearsome — gives her a unique place in Hopi cosmology.
