Runes, Symbols, and Sacrifice

Throughout history, symbols have carried meaning far beyond the words they represent. Among the ancient Norse peoples, runes were more than a practical writing system. They became powerful symbols of communication, memory, identity, and wisdom, woven into everyday life as well as mythology.

The earliest runic alphabet, known today as the Elder Futhark, appeared around the second century CE and was used throughout parts of Northern Europe. Individual runes represented sounds, allowing people to carve names, messages, memorials, and inscriptions into wood, bone, stone, and metal. While many surviving runic carvings were practical in nature, later traditions also associated individual runes with symbolic meanings and spiritual reflection.

Norse mythology offers one of its most enduring stories of wisdom through the god Odin. According to the Poetic Edda, Odin willingly hung upon Yggdrasil, the great World Tree, for nine nights. Wounded by his own spear and denied food and drink, he endured suffering in pursuit of deeper understanding. Only after this sacrifice did the mysteries of the runes reveal themselves to him.

Whether understood as mythology, poetry, or spiritual symbolism, the story teaches that wisdom often comes at a cost. Knowledge cannot always be handed freely from one person to another. It is frequently earned through perseverance, humility, experience, and a willingness to endure hardship in search of truth.

Symbols also held great importance within Celtic cultures, although they did not use the Norse runic system. Intricate knotwork, spirals, triskele designs, sacred trees, and the Ogham script each carried their own cultural meanings, reflecting humanity's relationship with nature, ancestry, continuity, and the cycles of life.

Across both traditions, symbols served as reminders rather than objects of power in themselves. A carved rune, a standing stone, or a sacred emblem invited reflection, preserved memory, and connected people with the stories and values of those who came before them.

Modern society surrounds us with symbols every day, yet we often overlook their influence. Ancient cultures understood that symbols help shape identity, preserve history, and communicate ideas that words alone sometimes struggle to express. A simple carving could remind an entire community of courage, responsibility, hope, or sacrifice.

The story of Odin's sacrifice reminds us that meaningful wisdom is rarely effortless. Learning requires patience. Growth often asks us to let go of certainty. The greatest lessons frequently arrive only after periods of struggle, reflection, and transformation.

In the end, runes remain more than ancient characters carved into stone. They stand as enduring reminders that the pursuit of wisdom has always required curiosity, resilience, and the courage to seek understanding beyond what is immediately known.

Creating God: Messengers of the Divine Part 2 — Messengers Across Ancient Civilizations

Messengers of the Divine

Part 2 — Messengers Across Ancient Civilizations

Every civilization told its own stories.

They worshipped different gods.

They spoke different languages.

They built different kingdoms.

Yet as the ancient world grew, one idea continued appearing almost everywhere.

The divine did not remain silent.

Again and again, civilizations described beings that carried messages between humanity and something greater.

Some had wings.

Some did not.

Some appeared as radiant humans.

Others took forms that reflected the culture that imagined them.

Their appearances changed.

Their purpose remained remarkably familiar.

Ancient Egypt offers one of the earliest examples.

Rather than describing a single class of heavenly messengers, Egyptian religion included numerous divine beings who carried out the will of the gods. Some protected sacred places. Others guided souls into the afterlife. The ba, often depicted as a human-headed bird, represented part of a person’s spiritual essence capable of traveling between worlds. Winged figures also became powerful symbols of protection, with goddesses such as Isis and Nekhbet spreading their wings over kings, temples, and the dead.

Across the Persian world, another fascinating pattern emerged. Zoroastrian tradition described the Amesha Spentas and the Yazatas, divine beings who carried out the will of Ahura Mazda. They were not worshipped as supreme gods, but served as protectors, helpers, and guardians of creation, reflecting a growing belief that the divine worked through heavenly servants rather than acting alone.

The Greeks imagined their own messengers. Hermes traveled freely between Olympus and the human world, delivering the commands of Zeus, guiding travelers, escorting souls to the underworld, and crossing boundaries few others could cross. Iris, the goddess of the rainbow, also served as a messenger between the gods and humanity.

Although neither would be called an angel today, both fulfilled remarkably familiar roles.

The Romans continued many of these traditions while adding guardian spirits known as Genii and Lares, believed to watch over individuals, households, and families. Once again, the divine was not distant. It remained involved in everyday life through unseen protectors.

Further north, Norse tradition described the Valkyries, powerful female figures who rode across battlefields choosing those who would enter Valhalla. Odin’s ravens, Huginn and Muninn, traveled the world gathering knowledge before returning to their master each evening. One carried thought. The other carried memory. Together they became living messengers between the world of humanity and the realm of the gods.

Across the ancient Celtic world, stories told of the Aos Sí, mysterious beings connected to the Otherworld. While their roles varied from region to region, they often appeared as guides, protectors, or supernatural visitors who crossed the boundary between worlds.

What makes these traditions so fascinating is not that every civilization described exactly the same beings.

They did not.

Some imagined winged protectors.

Others imagined divine birds.

Others described radiant spirits.

Others told stories of travelers capable of crossing between heaven and earth.

Different appearances.

Different names.

Different religions.

Yet the same pattern continued appearing.

Humanity repeatedly imagined that the divine communicated through someone, or something.

By now, that pattern should feel familiar.

It first appeared in Mesopotamia.

Then Egypt.

Persia.

Greece.

Rome.

Northern Europe.

Again and again, civilizations imagined messengers, guardians, guides, and protectors standing somewhere between humanity and the divine.

And our journey is only beginning.

In the next chapter, we will explore how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam developed some of history’s most recognizable traditions surrounding angels, archangels, cherubim, and seraphim, and how those beliefs compare with the civilizations that came before them.
